Dimapur March 18 (MExN): Pertaining to the registration of non-locals under the office of the Angami Students Union (ASU), the organization has clarified on relevant matters on the issue.
The ASU through Medo Yhokha President and Sendeneikho Suosahie Vice President stated that in order to safeguard and protect the identity and economy of the tribal society, it had initiated certain regular activities intended to discourage and curtail the unregulated influx of illegal immigrants and ‘pouring in’ of non-locals into the Angami areas. It clarified that the aim was to obtain a detailed census of non-locals of different communities based in Kohima, to streamline and regulate the activities and profession of the non-locals and if necessary, to have a cohesive and regulated relationship with different non-local community organizations.
It was anticipated that the measures would go a long way in regulating and checking anti-social elements in the state capital it stated adding that the measures were to supplement and strengthen the existing ILP system operating under the District administration of the state which according to the ASU, had failed ‘miserably’ to produce any satisfactory result towards its purpose.
The ASU informed that it had several rounds of consultative meeting with different communities based in Kohima to which the communities had consented and endorsed the idea “anticipating that the project would also create avenue and opportunity for the non-local community organizations to systematically enroll their respective members in Kohima and enable them to work cohesively under their respective organizations”.
In the light of the matter the ASU stated that starting January 31 2006, the office had successfully undertaken extensive registration/regulation, issuance of identity cards for all the non-locals, temporarily/permanently residing under the ASU’s jurisdiction with the last date for the same being fixed for February 28, 2006.
“As of now, with expiry of date set for compulsory registration, the office has not approved for the extension of continuation of the same despite requests from the non-locals” the clarification stated adding that the ASU would continue regular surprise checks of defaulters. It warned that the ASU would not hesitate to impose heavy penalties and actions against defaulting non-locals. The consequences would not be held accountable upon the ASU it made clear while adding that “relating to the collection of Rs 250 that has been doing the round about, it is all rubbish and baseless.” It added that the ASU was deeply ‘convicted’ and had no compunctions whatsoever, “as far as the act is concerned, as the act is solely intended to protect the interest and wellbeing of the present generation and posterity coming in.”
