WOKHA, June 1 (MExN): A training programme on HIV and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) for Anganwadi workers was held on May 30 at the Conference Hall of the Chief Medical Officer’s (CMO) office, Wokha, and at the Town Hall, Chukitong. The programme was jointly organised by the Nagaland State AIDS Control Society (NSACS), Department of Health and Family Welfare, and the Department of Social Welfare.
Delivering the welcome address, C. James Ezung, District Welfare Officer, Wokha, expressed appreciation to NSACS officials and facilitators for organising the training. He encouraged Anganwadi workers to actively learn from the sessions and disseminate awareness on HIV and STI at the grassroots level.
Dr M. Nukshisangla Jamir, Joint Director (BSD), NSACS, delivered a session on the Elimination of Vertical Transmission of HIV and Syphilis. She emphasised early diagnosis and treatment, stating that timely intervention enables HIV-positive individuals to lead normal lives. She also spoke on WHO’s clinical staging of HIV and highlighted common signs and symptoms of STIs.
Metevinuo Sakhrie, Joint Director (IEC), NSACS, presented a session on the HIV and AIDS (Prevention and Control) Act, 2017. She highlighted the need for increased awareness, revealing that over 1,000 new HIV-positive cases were detected in Nagaland in the past year. Sakhrie outlined key provisions of the Act, including protection from stigma and discrimination, punishable offences, the role of the ombudsman, and guidelines on disclosing HIV-positive status.
A session on the basics of HIV and AIDS, the HIV scenario in Wokha district, and services available was conducted by Lichumo Odyuo, District Programme Officer, DISHA, Wokha. He detailed the modes of transmission and the initiatives undertaken by the DAPCU team.
The training was moderated by Ainato Yeptho, Deputy Director (MS), NSACS, and attended by Renchano Odyuo, CDPO Wokha; Dr Thungchanbemo Ezung, Chief Medical Officer, Wokha; and Anganwadi workers from Wokha town and Chukitong.
