Appeals to stop further contract appointments
DIMAPUR, SEPTEMBER 27 (MExN): The All Nagaland Government Teachers’ Association (ANGCTA) today while urging the Nagaland State Government to look into the grievances of existing contract teachers in government colleges, also asked that no further appointments on contract basis be made.
A press release from the ANGCTA said that there is considerable time lag between vacancies arising in the colleges and post advertisement and appointment thereafter.
”We understand that circumstances compel the authority in the Department to appoint contract teachers to fill up vacuum class rooms,” it added.
The association acknowledged that the vast majority of contract teachers are NET qualified and have fulfilled other pre requisite criteria specified by UGC. Further, some contract teachers are already over aged while rendering their best services to the colleges. It also pointed out that newly introduced disciplines in colleges are mostly manned by contract teachers fulfilling all UGC criteria.
“We are also aware that many have appeared in the interviews conducted by the department and the best were selected,” it added.
“UGC regulation demands for equal pay for equal work. The contract teachers work under the same pressure and constraints as any other colleague but paid meagerly. We cannot let their plight continue and their services go unrecognized,” the association said.
It urged the concerned authority to frame mechanism to redress their grievances accommodate the members.
While affirming its stand for direct recruitment through NPSC, the ANGCTA however said that the discrepancies and anomalies in the department cannot be ignored.
While seeking early solution to the existing situation, it appealed to the concerned authority not to give further appointments on contract. Any situation arising out of vacancy and the urgency for faculty, a system of adjustment by guest teachers on some fixed honorarium may be applied, it further suggested.
