The All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANSCU) commemorated its 38th Foundation Day on August 2 with its vas the key speaker to exhort the students.
In his speech, Medo mentioned that ANSCU is an outcome after the long felt need to have a common platform for all college students in Nagaland. Reading out the preamble to remind the purpose of ANSCU as a union, Chirhah pointed out that most times a lot of organizations forget their purpose and objectives thus their activities often get off-track from the vision of the organisation, therefore reminded the students of the purpose of the Union.
Considering ANSCU as a unique organization where the members belong to the same age group, and intellectual level as well as ‘vibrant, and full of hope’, Chirhah cited out the expectations that society has on such organizations. “As much as the society expects from us we need to give back to the society,” said Chirhah who appealed the students to contribute to the growth of society at large.
ANSCU is a powerful agent to bringing objectivity in times of conflict and strife, according to Chirhah, therefore the responsibility of ANSCU, as an intellectual group, also is greater in times of social and political turmoil, where it needs to ‘rise above the occasion’.
Chirhah also expressed concern over the use of words like ‘fight’, ‘demand’ or ‘ultimatum’ should be a last resort for a Union like ANSCU as such words denotes negativity and the lack of sensibility.
Basing on the objectives of the Union, Chirhah suggested issues that ANSCU must pursue such as checking quality education, and regulating exorbitant fees. The increase of private colleges is a big threat, viewed Chirhah, stating that in some cases of private education, quality is compromised over profits. Further, departments are randomly set up which is usually manned by a single professor and often most of the educators are not qualified enough. Therefore, Chirhah suggested that ANSCU must pressure the government to maintain strict regulations while giving affiliations or recognitions to private institutions.
The increasing private tuition centers which charges huge amount to students was also another issues highlighted, where many Teachers give more importance to their tuition centers rather than classroom teaching.
Citing the recent political scenario in Nagaland, non-payment of teachers’ salaries or Clean Election Campaign, Chirhah noted that the ANSCU as an intellectual group must voice out their concern and set an example of truth and right. “If we cannot be what we are today, we cannot become what we want tomorrow. We must not lose hope and to realize that hope, we need to act on it,” concluded Chirhah.
In his Presidential address, Temjennungsang Jamir, President, ANSCU noted that ANSCU was formed in 1979 under the motto ‘Unity is strength’ which paved way and contributed in many ways for achieving the aspirations of college students. Acknowledging the wisdom of the leaders who started the Union, Jamir pointed out that the core objective of the Union was to the commitment towards the upliftment of higher education in Nagaland.
A special number was presented by St. Joseph’s College, Jakhama. A prayer for ANSCU was pronounces by Pastor Mhasisielie Theünuo, CCRC, D Block, Kohima who prayed for the wisdom of the leaders, and the courage to rewrite a new history for the Nagas.
