PHEK, JANUARY 30 (MExN): The National Anti-Leprosy Day and Sparsh Leprosy Awareness Campaign were observed in Phek on January 30 at the Deputy Commissioner Conference Hall. The event was held under the theme "Unite. Act. Eliminate," in line with global efforts to raise awareness about leprosy and its ongoing elimination.

The awareness campaign sought to highlight the challenges faced by individuals affected by leprosy, raise public consciousness, and inspire collective action to eliminate the disease. Dr. Ebenezer Phesao, District Tuberculosis Officer (DTO) and District Leprosy Consultant (DTC) Phek, delivered the keynote address, emphasizing the importance of combating the stigma surrounding leprosy. "This occasion serves as a reminder of our continued fight against leprosy, a disease that has long carried the weight of stigma and discrimination," Dr. Phesao said. He also stressed the need for renewed advocacy for policies that protect the rights of those affected by leprosy.

Balong Phom, EAC Headquarters Phek, encouraged participants to become ambassadors in the fight against leprosy, noting the significance of early diagnosis and treatment. "To achieve our goal, we need to unite and work together," he said.

The Anti-Leprosy Pledge was led by Saratho Katiry, Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil), Headquarters Phek. The program began with an invocation by Kuvesa Nyekha, Youth Director of the 5th NAP Battalion Phek, followed by a welcome address from Kuduvo Kezo, District Program Officer, District AIDS Prevention and Control Unit (DAPCU). Azenuo Mere, District Community Mobilizer for NHM, chaired the program, and Dihuto, Senior Program Management Specialist (NLEP), delivered the vote of thanks.

The program also featured a special performance by Anuri Nienu and Sakulu Lohe from Tune Up Academy Phek.
