The recently-concluded district-level workshop on tobacco control laws for Kohima’s school teachers, has resolved to put up antismoking signboards in all educational institutions within Kohima district.
It has also resolved to implement tobacco control laws ‘in letter and spirit.’ Also, matter on tobacco are to be one of the topics in all important school teachers’ training programmes. Other resolutions arrived at the workshop include increasing taxation on tobacco products and imposing fine on defaulters; including a chapter on the ill- effects of tobacco by the NBSE and SCERT; creating smoking-free offices in the directorate of School Education and Higher Education; appealing to the district administration and municipal body over licensing retailers for implementation of tobacco Acts and early appointment of an enforcement agent by the department in concern.
It may be recalled that the workshop was organized by the department of Health &Family Welfare where teachers from 41 schools in Kohima attended.
