APO launches digital app to verify migrant workers in Angami areas

Kohima, August 18 (MExN): The Angami Public Organisation (APO) on August 18 launched a Digital Verification App aimed at registering, verifying and monitoring outside migrant workers within the Angami area.

The app was inaugurated by APO President Thejao Vihienuo at the APO Hall in Kohima.

In a press release, the APO said the app was prompted by what it described as the “rapid influx of illegal migrants” into the State every day, coupled with the State Government’s inability to strictly implement the Inner Line Permit (ILP).

According to the organisation, this has resulted in the unregulated entry and movement migrants with their numbers increasing at an “alarming rate.”

Therefore the APO felt the need for an app to detect and verify the status of such persons within its jurisdiction, it added.

The mobile-based application enables field agents to conduct verification at the village level or other locations and record details including an individual’s personal information, ILP status, purpose of visit, place of stay or work, employer details and duration of stay.

If an individual is verified again at another village or location, the new verification is added to the existing record, creating a traceable history of verification and movement, the APO stated in a press release.

Following successful verification, a digital verification pass can be generated, containing its validity period and other information.

Authorised administrators can also download details of registered individuals in a single Excel sheet for record-keeping and data management, it added.

The APO said the Angami Students’ Union has been entrusted with carrying out the verification exercise. It also sought the support and cooperation of other tribal bodies, stating that the threats it associates with illegal migration are common to all Nagas.

Seeks stronger ILP measures
Meanwhile, the APO said it has written to the Chief Secretary seeking stronger implementation of the ILP. Its demands include creation of a special ILP Cell in the Home Department and restoration of ILP check gates at all entry points.

The organisation has also proposed that migrant workers be allowed to work only for their guarantor and that ILP renewals be restricted to two times, after which the person should leave the State and reapply afresh.

As per the release, the Organisation further called for a holding centre for ILP defaulters before deportation and insisted that train services should not be allowed beyond Sukhovi Station until the ILP is strictly implemented in the State.

It also called for strict ILP checking at railway stations and the airport.

The APO described making the ILP fully online as one of its most important demands.
