Appeal for timely supply of food grains

Wokha/Kohima, December 16 (MExN): While appreciating the welfare schemes undertaken by the department from time to time, the Wokha Village Council (WVC) has appealed to the Department of Food and Civil Supplies and the transporters group to ensure timely supply of food grains and other essential commodities to the public as per the National Food Security Act 2013.

Any delay in distributing the commodities meant for the poor will directly affect the livelihood of the rural poor and villagers, WVC Chairman S. Yanphamo Tungoe said. While keeping in view the current cash crunch coupled with the approaching festive season, the WVC has requested the department concerned to expedite allotment of rations for this month by December 2016.

Further, the council added, “it has been learnt through media that the food grain stored in the godown had been sealed as alleged PDS scam in which we believe the law will take its own course of action. In the meantime, we appeal to the concerned authority to make necessary arrangement for timely delivery of the commodities at the earliest.”

In a separate press release, Fair Price Shop Union, Kohima also appealed to the authority of Department of Food & Civil Supplies to allow the stockists, whose godowns in Dimapur have been sealed, to resume operation in the interest of the beneficiaries at the earliest. The union opined that if the case is prolonged, the normal and timely delivery of food grains to the beneficiaries will be greatly affected. Meanwhile, the union on behalf of the Kohima fair price shops also thanked the F&CS department, Kohima for timely release of food grains to the beneficiaries of AAY and PHH in the district.
