DIMAPUR, MAY 14 (MExN): A capacity building programme for farmers of Nagaland on scientific aquaculture and inauguration of aquarium unit on fish germplasm of Nagaland was held in Dimapur on May 13 at Brooder Fish Farm Dimapur.
The programme organized by the ICAR - Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture and Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Government of Nagaland was graced by Dr Pramoda K Sahoo, Director of ICAR-CIFA as a chief guest.
Delivering the key note address, Rongsennungba, Director of Fisheries & AR Government of Nagaland termed the project as the dream project which was achieved through the endless help from CIFA and expressed gratitude and thankfulness to CIFA. Nagaland has a rich infantry of fish spices which harvests different kinds of fishes as it has a 42 Aquarium of houses of indigenous fishies collected and donated from the 16 districts of Nagaland, he informed. He reminded the department for proper preservation and maintenance of the unit for the benefit of the people.
Dr. Pramoda K. Saho, Director, ICAR- CIFA in his address termed the day as a proud and special moment and thanked the team for making the project a reality. The different fish species of Nagaland has a very useful potential and this can be achieved through the interest of the people and the department, he noted. Informing that huge number of species, about 60 percent is being imported into our country, he requested the farmers and the stakeholders to pass them to the department instead of consuming, them so that they can preserve it. The new species will be preserved and will be researched to collect the information, he said. He also felt the need for inspirng the young generation for preserving new species of fishes and also encouraged the farmers for keeping aquariums in their households.
Brief highlight of the project was delivered by Dr. Vimezo Kire. Deputy Director Of Fisheries & AR. where he acknowledged the support of CIFA to the department since long back and looked forward to working together even in the future. He also urged the staff to take care of the new Aquarium so that the species will be well preserved. He said that this preserved Aquarium will help and inspire children in the process of their studies to get information about the different kinds of fish species and was optimistic that Nagaland will have the finest species of fish in the upcoming future.
This program was chaired by Ketusielie Angami, Joint Director of Fisheries & AR. Dedication prayer was done by Lanuakum Longchar, Asst Pastor, DABA, and vote of thanks was delivered by Shamyung O Ongh, SDFO, Shamator.
