Dimapur, September 20 (MExN): The villages of Medziphema are famous for its pineapple farms which produces one of the “best and sweetest pineapples” of the world.
A DIPR report stated that to boost the Pineapple industry in Medziphema, the Assam Rifles undertook the initiative in 2014 and installed a Pineapple Caning and Juicing facility named as ‘Medziphema Food Processing Company’.
The initiative is owned by co-operative society comprising members of Assam Rifles and Council Members of Medziphema village.
The canning plant has seven civil employees, primarily local women from Medziphema. Over and above the support to these employees and their families, the canning plant while procuring pineapples in bulk from the various small scale farmers has ensured regular financial support to more than 20 to 25 farmers and their dependent family members. Overall the project with its active measures has been successful in ensuring better lives to hundreds of locals of Medziphema.
The produce i.e. fresh Pineapple, tined pineapple cans and bottled Pineapple juices are supplied to locals and security forces in the North East. The main vision of the Assam Rifles behind this venture is to institute welfare projects to generate employment and boost the economy of the state at micro level.
