A convoy of the 7 AR was ambushed while on its way from Kiphire to Meluri in Phek district on June 28. The incident occurred near the Meluri (Phek)-Kiphire boundary at around 1:15pm when 2 suspected IEDs exploded as the convoy was nearing the Tizu river.
The first blast occurred near a bridge above Tizu River and the other occurred some 100 meters away from the first, an official of the district administration informed.
One jawan was reported to have sustained splinter injuries in the blasts. He was airlifted to Dimapur for medical aid.
Meanwhile, the NSCN-K claimed that the attack was carried out by its cadres. Col. (Rtd) Isak Sumi, Deputy Kilonser, MIP, in a message stated that “Naga Army led UNLFW demolition trainees… set up IED ambush on Indian Security Forces” near Akhegwo village, Meluri, Phek district in the afternoon today.
