Assam Rifles under the aegis of HQ IGAR (North) today conducted a solemn ceremony in honour of Captain (Late) Neikezhakuo Kenguruse on the occasion of 18th Vijay Diwas here. Capt Kenguruse was killed during Kargil war in 1999. He was awarded with one of the nation’s highest gallantry award Mahavir Chakra posthumously.
In a function held at Capt. Kengruse War Memorial site here this morning, about 18 km away from state capital Kohima, several people joined the celebration and paid homage to all martyrs of Kargil war and remembered their supreme sacrifices.
Maj Gen Sanjay Gupta, IGAR (North) said Vijay Diwas is celebrated on July 26 every year in honour of the Kargil war heroes and is named after the success of Operation Vijay.
“The Kargil War was fought for more than 60 days. In this war, 527 soldiers of Indian Army sacrificed their lives and amongst them was Captain Kenguruse,” he recollected.
Captain Kenguruse is forever a source of motivation and inspiration to all ranks of the armed forces, Maj Gen Gupta stated, adding he was a jovial person who lived life to the fullest and was very helpful by nature.
“Capt. Kengruse was a fearless person and was always in the pursuit of adventure. He volunteered to undertake the daring commando mission on a rock cliff face with well fortified enemy machine gun post. He not only lived up to the traditions of the Indian army but also to the state of Nagaland and its warrior clans,” he said.
“We share the loss of his parents and family members and express our gratitude to them for giving the country such a brave son who has made not only Nagaland but the entire country proud.”
Expressing happiness over the presence of several young school children at the function, he stated, “Young generation of Nagaland should get motivation and must involve themselves to be part of the state and nation’s progress.”
He also urged upon young people to follow the motivation level of Capt. Kenguruse and work hard to achieve their destiny to lead a life of honour, pride, dignity and contribute to the growth of society, state, and nation. Parliamentary Secretary Dr. Neiphrezo Keditsu also addressed the gathering.
Roko Kenguruse, brother of Neikezhakuo expressed gratitude to Assam Rifles for remembering “our late brother year after year on this special occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas.”
Roko added, “Today our family stands with pride and honour with the whole nation in celebrating this Vijay Diwas. We salute our fellow soldier’s family, who had laid down their lives for the nation in Kargil war.”
Several army top officers including civil administrative officials, public, ex-servicemen, public and school children attended the function. T
he occasion also witnessed laying of wreath on the memorial of Capt Kenguruse.
Two minute silence was also observed in remembrance of those soldiers who laid down their lives during Kargil war in 1999.
