At least 4 people were injured in an ambush near Aghunato, Zunheboto on September 2. Police sources from Zunheboto informed that the shooting occurred at around 4:10 pm. As per unconfirmed reports, a convoy of 4 vehicles carrying soldiers of the 5 Assam Rifles were ambushed at a place falling between Ghokishe and Luvishe village, approximately 2 km away from Aghunato town.

Security forces were stated to have cordoned off the area where the clash occurred and no civilian allowed in.

The ambush is reported to have been carried out by suspected NSCN (K) cadres which resulted in an intermittent exchange of gunfire lasting around half an hour.

While the actual number of casualty could not be ascertained, 4 jawans of the 5 AR were admitted to Aghunato CHC, police sources said. No civilian casualty was reported.

The number of the wounded however conflicted with the Assam Rifles version of the incident. The AR maintained that only one of its soldiers was injured in the fire fight. According to the Assam Rifles PRO, the soldier was injured in the leg and the injury was not life threatening. Citing communications intercepts, the PRO said that atleast 4-5 NSCN (K) cadres were injured in the retaliatory fire with one believed to have been critically wounded.
