One Assam Rifles trooper was killed and another injured in a road accident in Changtongya on September 30. The accident took place around 7:30 PM in the evening at Tsümokong Ward, about 1 Km away from Changtongya Police Station, informed Z Lotha, the Station Officer-in-Charge.
The vehicle was proceeding to Tuensang from Jorhat via Mokokchung carrying Canteen Stores Department (CSD) goods when the driver lost control negotiating a tricky turn and fell into a gorge about 150 feet down, below NH- 2, he added. He attributed the same to foggy night combined with the rain.
The two occupants of the vehicle – Constable Sandeep, the driver and Niak Subedar Brahma Seelan, were injured and admitted to the nearby Community Health Centre Changtongya.
Seelan, however, succumbed to injury around 8.30 PM in the evening, the OC added. The troopers belong to 8th Assam Rifle Battalion under the aegis of Headquarters 7 Sector Assam Rifles based in Tuensang.
After giving initial treatment at the CHC, the injured as well as the deceased were shifted to Imkongliba Memorial District Hospital Mokokchung for further treatment and post-mortem.
Amid speculation of public carrying away goods from ill-fated vehicle, locals from the area informed that they were assisting in collecting items and handing them over to the concerned authority.
The OC further informed some weapons carried by the vehicle were retrieved by the police and are in their safe custody.
It will be handed over to the concerned authority through proper channel, he added.
