AR “unauthorized action” condemned

NVC & SNBVC alleges ‘harassment’

MOKOKCHUNG, MAY 10 (MExN): The Nokpu Village Council and the Saring Nokpu ‘B’ Village Council today condemned the “unauthorized action of Assam Rifles personnel, who came to the village on May 8 and 9” and “started harassing and searching the houses of the villagers without assigning any reason.” A press statement by the Chairman of the NVC, L Nukshi Imchen and the Chairman, Imtiyongdang Longkumer of the SNBVC alleged that “encroachers from Assam, comprising of armed adivasis and illegal immigrants under the instigation of some individual with vested interest from the area” had “destroyed plantation and cultivated land within the village ancestral boundary.” It added that in spite of this, “the villagers have not reacted and expectantly waited for the administration from both Assam and Nagaland to solve the dispute amicably and peacefully.” The statement however said, “It is discouraging to note that instead of taking action against the armed encroachers, the Assam Rifles personnel have taken a one sided view of the situation and started harassing the villagers.” The councils asserted that the “action of the army” is highly objectionable and deserves the strongest condemnation from all right thinking people. It further appealed for the appropriate authority to immediately intervene in the situation.
