Are Mians the only Sexual Abusers?

Alemrenla Jamir

Wow!! It is such a privilege that I am living in India, the biggest democratic nation in the world. Keeping this at the back of my mind I am happy that I can scribble my thoughts. My mother Nagaland, I was once so proud to be one of your children. When I travelled around the neighbouring states, I raise my head high just to be introduced as a “Naga”, yet ironically people seated out there from all corners of the world glanced at me as a head hunting race, naked people or may be someone who came all the way from jungle. But never did I even once felt ashamed of who I am. My Naga blood bubbled forth when I came across heart wrenching news of “23-yrs old girl rapped by four mian” on the front page of Nagaland Post, dated 8th Feb., 2012. How dare mians touched the daughter of the soil in which they are sheltered. My heart run with tears, people who once upon a time respected and feared as “the Nagas“ are now shameless to abuse sexually. So are Nagas abusing a daughter or mians?

I want to pose a thought to all my fellow Nagas who love their mother land. I am not doing this to hurt anyone but to wake our sleeping Naga minds. What gave them the courage to do such an inhuman act in a place like Nagaland. I wonder whether they had even paused for a while of what Nagas will do to them. Is it us??? Indeed we show to fellow mians and others bad examples of moral corruption by sexually abusing our own sisters. In fact, they seem to be copying or reproducing our bad moral behaviours. We tend to abuse physically and sexually those coloured girls and boys helping in our homes. This may be the reason why mians do not fear us. When a Naga brother is accused of sexual abuse, we do not even punish for what he deserves. Yes, we are a Christian dominated state and no one can ever measure shoulder to shoulder with the Nagas for we are a unique people. But this does not justify us to be blind to the truth and ignore the injustices of sexual abuses committed by our own people. For me, paying pig and heavy amount as penalty to the guilty will only give our society a bulging stomach. I have firsthand information that in Saudi Arabia one would hardly find thieves. For that matter sexual abuse is out of question for them, to even touch a lady, their reproductive organ will be cut off from their body. Today, look at what we have become, we have exploited our motherland that people from all corners and walks of life who come from other places do not regard us any longer.

Wake up!!! Nagalim, what are we doing. Let us stop ourselves from moral degradation and bravely fight against such sexual abuse and corruption. Fellow sisters we are of greater value than anything else. Let us not sleep in the dose of immorality. Let us wake up and make this Nagaland a safe abode for all and not a sexual hunting hot spot for others. Let us not sexually abuse our own brothers and sisters so that other people will not abuse us.
