DIMAPUR, June 29 (MExN): The Indian Army and Assam Rifles on June 28 commemorated the 26th Memorial Day of Captain Neikezhakuo Kengurüse, Maha Vir Chakra (Posthumous), who laid down his life during the Kargil War in 1999, in a solemn ceremony held at the Kengurüse War Memorial in Nerhe Phezha, Nagaland.
The event was led by Major General Manish Kumar, SM, Inspector General of Assam Rifles (North), who served as the chief guest. The ceremony was attended by the martyr’s parents, along with veterans from Wokha and Kohima, Indian Army and Assam Rifles personnel, local dignitaries, and students from four schools across Nagaland.

The tribute began with a wreath laying and lighting of the Amar Jawan Jyoti, followed by the screening of a documentary highlighting Capt Kengurüse’s bravery and ultimate sacrifice during Operation Vijay.
The occasion also included a ceremonial march past by the 1 Nagaland NCC Battalion, pipe bands from Fernbrook School and Assam Rifles, and a veterans’ contingent. A prayer service was held to honour the fallen officer, and his parents were felicitated during the programme.

In his keynote speech, Maj Gen Kumar described Capt Kengurüse as a symbol of valour and inspiration for future generations, praising his leadership and unwavering courage in the face of adversity.
To extend the legacy of service, Capt Kengurüse’s father inaugurated the “Capt N Kengurüse, MVC Medical Camp,” a civil outreach initiative of Assam Rifles. A biography of the martyr, written by his elder brother Mr. Neingutoulie Kenguruse, was also released during the ceremony.
