Arson attack at Manipur University

Newmai News Network Imphal | October 4   Miscreants torched a recreation hall, a fast food restaurant and three DTP centres inside the Manipur University (MU), Canchipur campus in the outskirt of Imphal.   The incident took place around 10 pm Monday. Fire Brigade helped in dousing the blaze.   Following the “arson attack” all departments of the varsity were shut. A large number of police personnel have been deployed and remained alert inside the Manipur University campus to thwart further "vandalism attempt." It can be recalled here that the varsity witnessed protest by the Manipur University Tribal Students’ Union (MUTSU) inside the campus over reservation imbroglio on Monday. At the same time, the Manipur University Entrance Examination Demand Committee (MU-EEDC) also staged demonstration in the campus.   The protests took place amidst a crucial meeting of the Manipur University Academic Council. MUTSU has demanded 31 percent reservation for Scheduled Tribes (ST) students in the varsity as per the Act passed by the Parliament upholding the UGC norms.   On the other hand, the Manipur University Entrance Examination Demand Committee said the Manipur University authority should not allow further delay of the admission process. It said the UGC norms should be followed by the authority of the varsity with regard to reservation seats and asked the Vice Chancellor to resign from the post for his “inability” to tackle the deadlock.
