DIMAPUR, JUNE 28 (MExN): Upholding the tradition of service to the people of the North-East, the authorities of Assam Rifles Training Centre and school, Dimapur have set up a HIV/AIDS Drop-in Centre at the Dhansiri Complex, Assam Rifles. The centre would be run in collaboration with the District AIDS Committee and various NGOs of the state with the aim to provide counseling to the people tested positive for HIV. The Drop-in Centre which was to be inaugurated by Lt Gen Bhopinder Singh, PVSM, AVSM, VSM, Director General, Assam Rifles could not be avilable on the occasion owing to his official commitments. On his behalf, the Drop-in Centre was inaugurated by two children of Dimapur, Jangmin Lun Hokip and Ashale Zemi. A large number of civil dignitaries, Assam Rifles Officers and jawans attended the inaugural function. Deputy Commissioner of Dimapur, Nzimongo Ngullie also attended the function.
The centre is open to all civilians and their dependents. Recreational facilities such as indoor games and leisure-reading facilities are also being provided to the public at the centre. A team of medical experts and qualified counselors have been employed by the Assam Rifles to impart effective counseling and to spread awareness among the general public about HIV/AIDS, its cause and methods of prevention. This noble gesture of the Assam rifles, “Friends of the Hill People” would go a long way in curtailing the burgeoning spread of AIDS cases in and around Dimapur town.
