ARTEM to present Sewon Rai’s Art Exhibition

Gangtok, February 10 (MExN): The People’s Studio at ARTEM will be showcasing the works of Sewon Rai, an art practitioner from Gangtok.
The opening Art Exhibition titled ‘Death, Longing, Memory’ by Sewon Rai will be held on February 11 at 5:00 pm. The exhibit will then be open for viewing from February 11 to March 8, Monday - Friday, from 11:00 am – 5:00 pm, informed Anushya Pradhan, Events Head, The People's Studio at ARTEM, in a press release.


The release said that Sewon’s paintings, drawings and inkjet prints curated for the exhibition speak to the viewers and their deleterious impact on nature.


It described of tension between life and death and nature and destruction that was apparent in his works. His work is inspired by reflections on larger socio-political issues as well as very personal memories, it added.


Sewon studied at The Indian College of Arts and Draftsmanship, Kolkata where he completed his BFA in painting and then at RabindraBharati University, Kolkata where he pursued an MFA, furthering his painting practice. He has also been a scholar at the Lalit Kala National Research Scholarship, Kolkata, India (2017-2018).


The artist will also be conducting a workshop on woodcut printmaking on February 15, 16 and 17 at the Studio. Interested individuals can contact (9820791324). Total of 20 slots are available for the workshop.


The exhibition and the workshop is a part of The People’s Studio at ARTEM’s vision to showcase, exhibit art and artworks from the region and to create a culture and audience for art in the region.
