As Phek celebrates 50 years, CM Rio urges all to ‘act, talk and live peace’

Paying rich tributes to Phek district for its vibrant culture, traditions, honesty, sincerity and hard working attitude, Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio today called upon the people to “Act peace, talk peace and live in peace.”

Gracing the 50th Anniversary celebration of Phek district on December 21 at Phek town under the theme ‘Transcending in Truth,” Rio called upon the people of Phek district to maintain peace and unity and strive towards strengthening Naga society.

He maintained that Phek district has the most progressive people in Nagaland, and asked them to grow higher and be influencers to Naga society.

Phek district was inaugurated by the then Transport Minister N Theyo on December 21, 1973. Saluting the pioneers for the formation of Phek district in 1973, he called upon the present leaders to continue to plan well for inclusive growth of the district.

Despite the ‘backward’ tag, he said the people of Phek district are excelling well in NPSC, NSSB, NBSE and UPSC exams and encouraged them to continue to work hard and excel further through sincerity and honesty. He maintained that people from the Chakhesang community are successful in many fields and they exercise a sense of competition and responsibility.

Meanwhile touching on the demand of the Pochury Hoho for creation of Meluri as separate district, Rio said that the matter has reached the table of the State Government. He added that the government will study the matter and assured the people that it will materialize in due course of time.

“Unity should be the top most priority,” he however said, while expressing happiness over the prevailing unity among the people of Phek district. Rio said that unity and peaceful atmosphere will facilitate students to carry out successful academic activities; help farmer in their agricultural endeavours; and assist businessmen in their economic activities. He said that when there is unity and the feeling of oneness and brotherhood, Nagas can do well in all spheres of life.

“If Nagas as a whole is successful, everyone will be successful. But, if Nagas as a whole are not successful, everyone of us will be affected,” he stated. He also called upon the people to live up to Christian principles while upholding good traditional practices.

Earlier, Pochury Hoho President, Chonpa Jurry; Chakhesang Public Organization (CPO) President, Vezühü Keyho; MLA Dr Neisatuo Mero; New & Renewable Energy and NSDMA Advisor, Z Nyusietho Nyuthe; and CAWD & Taxes Advisor Kudecho Khamo delivered short speeches. Programme Committee Convenor and MLA Kuzholuzo (Azo) Nienu delivered the welcome address while Power & Parliamentary Affairs Minister KG Kenye proposed the vote of thanks. The inaugural function was chaired by Phek Deputy Commissioner Kuko Mero.

The celebration was also marked by a cultural exhibition, anniversary feast, fireworks and anniversary fusion event.
