Kohima | February 14

The six days long 50th Meet 2022 of Angami Sports Association (ASA) got underway here today at Indira Gandhi Stadium.

Around 600 sportspersons from Northern Angami Sports Association (NASA), Southern Angami Sports Association (SASA), Western Angami Youth Organization (WAYO) and Chakhroma Youth Organization (CYO), have registered for the meet, which will continue till February 19.

NASA topped the medal tally on day one (February 14) with 6 Gold, 8 Silver and 5 Bronze medals, followed by SASA (4 Gold, 1 Silver and 3 Bronze), and CYO (1 Silver).

The 50th ASA Meet 2022 will feature athletics, indigenous games, football, volleyball, table tennis, sepaktakraw, badminton and Naga wrestling.

It will take place in four locations: Tsiesema Ground, Indira Gandhi Stadium, Indoor Stadium Kohima and Khuochiezie (Kohima Local Ground).

Gracing the inaugural function as the special guest, Nagaland Youth Resources & Sports Advisor, Er Zale Neikha maintained that that there is no dearth of talent among the Naga youth in sports. He, however, regretted that the Naga youth fail to outdo others at the higher level of competitions due to lack of dedication, sacrifice and sincerity.

There are no shortcuts in sports, he said adding that one has to work hard to get medal for himself/herself like the students who study hard for academic excellence. He told the Naga youth not to be complacent with their record at the village or area level but to give extra effort to make a breakthrough to the higher level.

He meanwhile stated that blame games through social media for poor sports infrastructure will no longer bring a positive result. He claimed that many international players too started their careers through the grassroots level and play in the ground like here.

He informed that the state government under Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio is committed to upskill the talents of the youth as well as to improve the sports infrastructure in the state.

Touching on Khelo India State Centre of Excellence (KISCE) in Kohima, Er Neikha said that the Centre is focusing on wrestling, boxing and archery.

He also maintained that the appointment of Abu Metha as associate vice president of Athletics Federation of India (AFI) would boost the athletic events in Nagaland. In this, he urged the athletes to take advantage of the same and hunt for excellence at the national and international level.
