Asangma Students’ Union organises open penalty shootout in Dimapur

In aid of its platinum jubilee celebration, the Asangma Students’ Union (ASU) organised an open penalty shootout here at the grounds of the Dimapur District Sports Complex (DDSC) on February 24. 

The tournament saw the participation of over 30 teams from across Dimapur and Chümoukedima vying for the top position which guaranteed a cash prize of Rs 50,000. 

President of the Ao Students’ Union Dimapur, Imnatemsu Pongen was invited as the special guest for the inaugural programme. Pongen mentioned that penalty shoot-outs as an integral part of the sport of football has garnered widespread popularity among the populace over the years. He encouraged such competitions to be held regularly as a basis towards promotion of the game of football among the youths.  

Convenor of the organising committee, Bendang Imsong meanwhile stated that the response to the tournament has been considerably positive not just from among the Aos but from all sections of Dimapur and beyond who had come to participate in it. 

The tournament is part of the jubilee declaration of the ASU, which aims to raise funds for its upcoming programme, expected to be held in the month of December 2024, he said. Officials from the Dimapur Naga Students Union (DNSU) were also in attendance. 

The first shootout was played between teams of the DABA Youth Ministry and Asangma Students’ Union. Later the final round was played between Royal FC and Power Kickers where the former emerged as the overall champions of the tournament. Power Kickers who came in second walked home with a cash prize of Rs 30,000 as well. 

Other individual winners included Nahing Zeliang (Duncan Basti team) as the best shooter while Ato from Power Kickers received the best keeper award.

Earlier, the invocation was bestowed by Rongsenkangla while a special number was performed by Lanuinla Lemtur.
