‘Asani’ brings more rain to Nagaland, NE states

Dimapur, May 8 (MExN): The deep depression over Southeast Bay of Bengal, which intensified into a severe cyclonic storm ‘Asani' on Sunday evening according to the Indian Meteorological  Department (IMD), brought widespread across Nagaland and North East region. 

As it intensifies, thunderstorm with heavy rainfall hit many places in Nagaland Sunday evening, causing power outages, among others. 

In Dimapur, three feeders were affected during the storm and workers were on the job to restore the lines, informed power department officials.  

Meanwhile, PTI news agency quoting the IMD reported that ‘Asani’ intensified into a severe cyclonic storm as it moved northwestwards in the direction of north Andhra Pradesh-Odisha coasts, Sunday evening.

On reaching westcentral and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal off north Andhra Pradesh-Odisha coasts on Tuesday,  it is very likely to recurve north-northeast wards and move towards northwest Bay of Bengal off Odisha coast, it said. The severe cyclonic storm is very likely to lose some steam thereafter and turn into a cyclonic storm on Wednesday and further into a deep depression on Thursday, it added. 

As it intensifies, ‘Asani’ is likely to bring more rain in Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Bengal as well as other adjoining areas in the in the coming days. 

In the NE, the IMD forecasted ‘very likelihood’ of “fairly widespread to widespread light/moderate rainfall with thunderstorm/lightning/gusty winds" over Northeast India during next 5 days.

“Isolated heavy falls very likely over Arunachal Pradesh during 10th-12th and over Assam-Meghalaya & Mizoram-Tripura during 09th-12th May,” the national weather forecaster added in an update on Sunday.
