Kohima, Jan 15 (DIPR): A 10 member delegation of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) Dialogue Society accompanied by the Chairman and the Managing Trustee of Centre for Northeast Studies (CNES) will be visiting Nagaland on January 17 for interactive dialogue with the State Government and members of the civil society of Nagaland.
On their arrival on January 17, the members will call upon the State Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and the Governor of Nagaland Shyamal Datta and visit the Industrial Growth center and Export Promotion of Industrial Park (EPIP) at Ganeshnagar.
A dialogue with the State government and the various NGOs at the Zonal Council Hall has been summoned on January 18.
The team will visit War Cemetery and Kisama Heritage Viallage before their departure on January 19.
Members of the delegation include Prof. Mya Than and Prof. Maung Zarni from Myanmar, Prof. Shigeru Tsumori and Seko Masato from Japan, Johnson Davasagayam Paul T, Murugaiah Rajarethnam and Shamini Rajarethnam from Singapore, Karuna Jha from Russia, Surin Pitsuwan from Thailand, Prof. Rajah Rasiah, Sanjoy Hazarika and Dr. VA Pai Panandikar.
It may be mentioned that the ASEAN was established on 8 August 1967 in Bangkok by the five original Member Countries, namely, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. Brunei Darussalam joined on 8 January 1984, Vietnam on 28 July 1995, Laos and Myanmar on 23 July 1997, and Cambodia on 30 April 1999.
The ASEAN Declaration states that the aims and purposes of the Association are to accelerate the economic growth, social progress and cultural development in the region through joint endeavors in the spirit of equality and partnership in order to strengthen the foundation for a prosperous and peaceful community of Southeast Asian nations and to promote regional peace and stability through abiding respect for justice and the rule of law in the relationship among countries in the region and adherence to the principles of the United Nations Charter.
In 1995, the ASEAN Heads of States and Government re-affirmed that “Cooperative peace and shared prosperity shall be the fundamental goals of ASEAN.”
