ASF hits Doyang farm area; DC Wokha issues containment measures

Wokha, October 16 (MExN): In response to the reported deaths of pigs in the Doyang Right Bank Farm area of Wokha district due to African Swine Fever (ASF), Deputy Commissioner Vineet Kumar has issued a series of advisory measures aimed at containing the disease.

The measures included restrictions on the movement of pigs and pork within a 1 km radius of the infected zone. Additionally, the slaughter and sale of pigs or pork have been prohibited in this area.

The advisory also called for close monitoring of the surveillance zone, which extends 9 km outside the infected zone.

Proper disposal of dead animals through deep burial or incineration is mandated within the infected zone.

The DC also has urged village councils to remain vigilant and report any suspected cases of ASF to the nearest Veterinary Office or Officer.

The ASF is a contagious disease in pigs that has a high mortality rate, leading to significant economic losses; thus, it necessitates heightened vigilance and containment efforts, the advisory noted.

Accordingly, the measures were issued based on a report from the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, Wokha, under Section 6(1) of the Prevention and Control of Infection and Contagious Diseases in Animals Act 2009 to manage the outbreak effectively.
