The Congress party in Manipur strongly reacted to a government office memorandum setting its officials to exit from social media groups within 48 hours.
The Manipur government, in an office memorandum issued on Wednesday, asked its employees to leave social media groups that are "furthering separatist, anti-national, communal and divisive agenda" by 6 p.m. of August 12.
“It is a clear violation of the rights to information given to the citizens by the constitution of India,” said Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) K Meghachandra today.
Talking to reporters on the sideline of party’s "Ajadi ki Gourav Yatra" in Kakching district today, Meghachandra observed that social media like Whatsapp, Facebook etc. are the effective platforms that one can know the news of events happening in the state and other parts of the globe.
The MPCC leader said that banning government employees from participating in social media groups is nothing but violation of one’s rights given under the constitution of India.
He added that such violation of rights of the citizens was not the first time since the BJP came to power in the country. There were many instances of the BJP government violating the rights of freedom of speech of the media and right to information of the citizens, he further added.
The move of banning the employees participating in the social media group amounts to suppressing the freedom of expression and the right to information of the employees, he said.
