Parliamentary Secretary for Municipal Affairs and Economics & Statistics, R Tohanba, underscored the need for educated Naga youths to venture into entrepreneurial and private sectors for a successful career.
The Parliamentary Secretary said in the present context of Nagaland with oversaturation of government employees, the State Government was finding it difficult even to pay the salary of its employees. Tohanba said due to financial burden, the government had also to do away with pension scheme for its employees. In such a situation, the craze for white collar government jobs was fast losing sheen and educated youths have to search for other career opportunities for their sustenance, he said.
The Parliamentary Secretary was speaking at the one-day seminar on “Career and soft skill development” organized by the Western Yimchungrü Students’ Union (WYSU) held at Yimchungrü Baptist Church Dimapur on April 23.
Tohanba said private sectors and enterprises still have million of employment opportunities provided one has the requisite skill and expertise. He said seminars and career counseling such as the one organized by the WYSU was a path breaking initiative, especially for thousands of students and underprivileged youths from backward areas.
Even back home, while the youth cry hoarse over unemployment problem, Tohanba said majority of the labour force including skilled and unskilled workers are imported from outside the state. He said Naga youths need to cultivate dignity of labour and not to shy away from manual labour if they to become economical self-reliant.
To succeed in any profession or career, he said one must be committed, dedicated, honest and hard working. The parliamentary secretary also reminded that one must carefully choose his or her career options and not just blindly follow the crowd. He further said one’s career must not be overshadowed by one’s hobbies.
Principal, Nagaland Tool Room & Training Centre, Er. Petehoutuo, and James Kithan from Pinnacle Skills, the resource persons of the seminar, highlighted on the various career options, courses and other soft skill programmes provided by the respective institutes.
Earlier, vice president Western Yimchungrü Hoho, LS Yimchunger, delivered the welcome address.
In the afternoon session, Dr. Tsukhomong spoke on ‘career and courses’ and assistant commandant, 13 NAP (IR) also exhorted the students.
