Assam train murder: Police release sketch of suspected killer

Rape cases filed in probe, media report   Dimapur, July 12 (MExN): The Assam Police on Thursday released the sketch of a man who is suspected of killing a college girl inside an inter-city train.   She was one of the two women found dead in less than 24 hours inside the washrooms of different trains, The Indian Express online reported.   On July 10, the body of girl was found inside the washroom of the train at around 9.40 am. A traditional towel — called “gamusa” in Assam — was found around the victim’s neck.   Prima facie probe and marks on the victims’ neck have led the police to suspect that she was strangulated, the report said. A student of Assam Agriculture University in Jorhat, she was on her way to meet a relative in Golaghat. Her mother had reportedly seen her off at the station, it added.   In the second murder case, a woman in her late forties was found dead in a washroom of Avadh Assam Express, which runs between Assam and Rajasthan. The body was discovered on Wednesday when Avadh Assam Express reached Mariani station in Jorhat district around 2.20 pm, the report said.   Both the incidents have created a sensation in Assam and police are trying to establish whether there is any connection between the two cases, it added.   Meanwhile, a report in the Hindustan Times said that the police have registered rape cases in connection with the murders. Police have also apprehended a man from Tinsukia in Upper Assam in connection with the murders, it said adding, “Investigators are awaiting autopsy reports to confirm sexual assault,” quoting an unnamed Railway Police officer.   “Two separate cases have been registered in railway police stations in Simaluguri and Mariani under sections 302 [murder] and 376 [rape] of the IPC on July 11,” the report further informed quoting R Chandranathan, special director general of police, railways.   Similarities in the modus operandi have led police to suspect that the same person may be responsible for both the killings, it added.
