DIMAPUR, AUGUST 19 (MExN): Police personnel manning the checkpost at Chumukedima have been accused of assaulting civilians. The allegation was made by three organisations - New Chümoukedima Youth Organization (NCYO), New Chümoukedima Village Students' Union (NCVSU) and the Chakhroma Students' Union (CSU).
The three organisations in two separate media statements condemned the alleged assault on CSU President Rokovi Kruse, NCYO President Keneingukho Hama and the organisation’s Wrestling Secretary Shezovil Kera on August 17 terming it as “senseless, highhanded and use of brute force by the police personnel” at the check post.
The CSU in its statement said the assault was the result of “a minor altercation” between a constable on duty and the three persons. As per the allegation, the constable subsequent to the altercation reported to his superior officer “labelling the three as extortionists,” who were levying tax of Rs 100 from a commercial vehicle. The CSU though termed the constable’s charge as “baseless and unfounded.”
Basing on the “false report” from the constable, the CSU alleged that the officer confronted and started assaulting the three with the other personnel also joining him.
“The case… may have been amicably settled, out of respect for the sagaciousness of the elderly and village leaders,” yet it added, “The young lot has taken serious and strong view of the incident.” Further alleging that there have been similar incidents when civilians were manhandled by police personnel at the checkpost, the CSU asked the police to be sensible and wary of their conduct.
The NCYO and the NCVSU in a joint statement alleged the assault was a “pre-planned act” as it was carried out without any inquiry basing on “false information.” “Although the matter have been amicably settled due to the sagacity and good faith of the New Chümoukedima Village Council and the timely intervention of the Assistant commissioner of Police,” the two organisations said that goodwill bestowed on the police personnel not be taken for granted.
The Dimapur police could not be reached for comment on the alleged incident.
