Assault on doctor condemned

Dimapur, December 2 (MExN): More organizations on Saturday condemned the alleged assault on a Naga doctor by migrant workers at Padumpukhri, Dimapur on November 30.

Survival Nagaland

Survival Nagaland (SN) vehemently condemned what it termed as “life attempt” on Dr Angukato Achumi.

Such “intolerable incidents” are open indication of how Nagaland is becoming doomed, a press release from SN’s Media Cell stated.

“It is unfortunate that on Nagaland statehood anniversary, the Nagas had to witness a case such as this where even an educated and law abiding citizen serving the society with one of the noblest profession in the world was manhandled like a criminal,” SN stated and questioned if a time has come where Nagas can no longer roam freely in their own localities for fear of migrants.

SN assured that it would not rest till the remaining 12 absconders are arrested and brought to justice.

Meanwhile, SN took a serious view of the two Naga men who allegedly directed that the doctor be kept under arrest.

Upon their arrival, the poor Doctor heaved a sigh of relief, expecting that he would be rescued but surprisingly the duo insulted the victim with abusive words both on professional and tribal lines, SN claimed and maintained that it found their act "intolerable and unpardonable".

It asked that the construction owner reveal the identities of the two within a week cautioning that “choosing to keep it secret after this reminder would not be justifiable but objectionable.”

“This is a serious Naga issue hence, no act of anti-Naga shall be tolerated under any circumstances,” SN asserted and demanded the immediate arrest of the duo. “SN shall take step to any extent should there be individual or group to bail out the anti-Naga duo after the arrest,” it added.

SN further expressed its appreciation to the Padumpukhuri Village Council on its resolution not to allow any new suspected migrants to settle in the village. It termed the resolution a good example to be followed by all concerned colonies and villages in Nagaland and added, “Together we can achieve if there is a will.”

Sumi Doctors’ Association

The Sumi Doctors’ Association vehemently condemned what it termed as “inhuman” assault meted out on Dr. Angukato Achumi.

The association stated that it was appalled at the manner in which a Naga citizen was manhandled even after he revealed his identity as a doctor. “The manner in which he was tied up and assaulted is amply clear that they had murderous intents on an innocent Doctor and a Naga,” the association argued.

It appealed the law enforcing agency to arrest all the culprits involved at the earliest and also ensure that the perpetrators of these crimes are not bailed out under any condition. “Whosoever tries to bail out these culprits will be doing so at his/her own risk,” the association warned.

CNTC

The Central Nagaland Tribes Council while flaying the incident rued that such incidents have now become frequent.

“Mere condemnations in the newspapers and social medias time and again won’t have any effect,” the CNTC maintained and called on all Nagas to come together in unison to root out this menace from the core at the earliest.

Further stating that Nagas have to take its share of blame for protecting and sheltering migrant workers for their cheap labour “which is inviting many unwanted elements and incidents to take place”, the CNTC suggested that the government initiate a proper mechanism at the earliest in coordination with civil societies.

“Incidents like these should have now open our eyes and Nagas should start taking drastic steps otherwise the grave danger lurking at our very near future is imminent,” the Council stated.

Further stating that some Nagas were involved in the assault on Dr. Angukato, the CNTC warned of stern action against them. The Council also advised Nagas to keep away from such acts of patronizing and protecting outsiders for personal interests.

UUDA

The Usutomi Union Dimapur Area strongly condemned the assault on one of its bona fide member. While urging every right thinking Naga to stand as one, the union appealed that the perpetrators of the assault not be provided safeguards.

“The union will fight for justice till the end,” the UUDA stated and further called on the law enforcing agency not to be influenced by outside force.
