KOHIMA, FEBRUARY 7 (MExN): Students organizations has voiced strong condemnation over the January 29 incident where in a 19 year old student identified as Moalong Jamir, a student of Tetso College was allegedly assaulted by police personnel of Anti Vehicle Thief Squad (AVTS), resulting in multiple injuries- including damage in the left ear drum, fractured spinal cord and a swollen kidney.
The All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANCSU) termed it disheartening to witness such blatant abuse of power and a violation of the trust bestowed upon the police force by the public. “The incident in question, where a college student was subjected to excessive force, not only undermines the principles of justice and fairness but also erodes the faith of the community in law enforcement,” it stated.
It also sought to point out that use of excessive force, especially against unarmed individuals, is a clear violation of human rights and a direct contradiction to the principles of a just and a democratic society.
Towards this, the students’ body has called the attention of all right-thinking citizens and organizations to vehemently condemn the incident so as to deliver justice to the innocent victim and prevent such occurrence in the future. It also appealed the Police department to carry out an immediate investigation and take appropriate action against those unjust police personnel.
The Ao Kaketshir Mungdang (AKM) said “such wicked disregard for the well-being and dignity of individuals is not only reprehensible but also a betrayal of the trust bestowed upon law enforcement agencies by the public.”
The AKM has demanded prompt and decisive action from the relevant authorities to ensure that those responsible for this heinous act are immediately suspended pending a thorough and impartial investigation.
“Justice must prevail, and accountability must be upheld to restore faith in the integrity of our law enforcement institutions,” it underscored.
The Dimapur Naga Students Union (DNSU) said “such a misconduct by the police on duty and unjustly charging at the innocent student before proper interrogation by the highest law enforcing agencies without legal procedure is highly amateurish on the part of the officers on duty.”
It has demanded immediate intervention by the higher authority of the concerned bureau to take lawful measures against the concerned policemen of the AVTS so as to avoid further distrust and unbelief on the law agencies by the general populace.
Ongpangkong Senso Telongjem Dimapur said the "unfortunate incident occurred without any justifiable reason, making it highly uncharacteristic of a well-trained AVTS team to handle the situation in such an unprofessional and reckless manner."
The OSTD has urged the authorities to take swift necessary actions against the irresponsible personal of the AVTS team, ensuring accountability and justice for the victim. It also called upon the higher authorities to implement measures to prevent recurrence of such untoward incidents.
The Soyim Shisaluyimer Telongjem (SST) said this incident has left many people feeling violated, frightened, and disillusioned with the institutions that are intended to protect and serve the public.
“It is profoundly unsettling that individuals who are expected to uphold the law and safeguard citizens have instead opted to use their authority to commit such horrible crimes,” it stated.
The SST has demanded that the officers involved be held accountable for their conduct. This type of attitude cannot be condoned in any society, let alone by those responsible for enforcing the law, it added.
