All elected members of the 12th Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) today took oath before the pro-tem speaker Namri Nchang during the first session of the 12th NLA. Day one of the assembly session was adjourned following the election of Speaker to the 12th NLA in which Chotisuh Sazo was elected unopposed.

Earlier, leader of the House and Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio assured the newly elected Speaker Chotisuh Sazo the support of the Treasury Bench. While lauding the commendable reputation of the highest standard of decorum which the NLA has maintained, Rio expressed optimism that under the stewardship of Sazo, new standards of parliamentary decorum will be achieved.

He lauded Sazo as a person with high credentials – that of vast experience as a former government officer and later as a Parliamentary Secretary. While acknowledging that Sazo was elected by the people as an NPF candidate, Rio said Sazo cannot be expected to be partial to the Treasury Bench and further encouraged him to be “fair, just and impartial” in his conduct of the House.

Leader of Congress Legislative Party, Tokheho Yepthomi, also expressed confidence that the newly elected Speaker would set fine examples for future Houses to emulate. Referring to his own experiences as a legislator in the NLA since 1993, Tokheho said that Sazo is the fifth Speaker during his tenure as a member, adding that if the Speaker maintains impartiality and bears liberal attitude, the House becomes lively. He expressed hope that the Speaker would be generous in dealing with members and treat everyone on equal footing, thereby upholding the tradition and dignity of the House.

Day two assembly proceedings will include the Governor’s Address by Nikhil Kumar. This will be followed by obituary references and moving of motion of thanks to the Governor’s Address.
