ASTD issues clarification on June 26 incident

DIMAPUR, JULY 2 (MExN): The Ao Senso Telongjem Dimapur (ASTD) has issued a clarification regarding the incident involving Meyi Jamir and Rohit Kumar Sah, son of Dharamnath Sah, which took place on June 26.

According to ASTD, the accused was summoned by the Mongsenyimti Senso Telongjem, Dimapur, where he admitted to his guilt. The matter was subsequently resolved amicably after the Bihari Samaj Dimapur requested that the issue be settled according to Ao customary practices rather than through formal legal channels.

On humanitarian grounds and in keeping with the Mongsenyimti Union Dimapur’s appeal for peaceful co-existence, the assailant was pardoned. A traditional fine in the form of a pig was imposed as part of the customary resolution, the clarification issued by ASTD maintained.

ASTD stated that under Ao customary law, offering an animal as a fine is a long-standing tradition used to atone for offences involving violence or harm. The practice, which may include fines of up to 30 pigs or cows in severe cases, symbolizes reconciliation and the restoration of harmony between parties.

The organisation also addressed public calls for punitive actions such as cancellation of the offender’s trade license, expulsion, or physical retaliation, stating that such actions fall outside the jurisdiction of any community-based organisation.

ASTD has requested that any individuals seeking further clarification on the matter may approach its office directly.
