ASU covers 39 villages in educational tour

KOHIMA, Feb 21 (MExN): In pursuance with its year programmes, the Angami Students Union (ASU) visited all its subordinate units, comprising of thirty nine villages from February 10 to 15 last.

The objective of the tour was to promote better coordination and collection of data concerning the prevailing system of education in all the government schools under ASU jurisdiction.

During the weeklong tour, the Union convened consultative meeting with different bodies- village councils, village education committee, student unions, concerned leaders and members. The Union briefed them various issues and at the same time invited constructive comments on the various affairs.

As per the findings of ASU, it has learnt that the education department was performing far below than what the ASU had expected. Numerous problems were traced out by the ASU during the tour, such as irregularity of the teachers, pitiable conditions of school buildings, transferring of post entitled to, shortage and excess of teachers,  proxy teachers etc.

The ASU lamented that the school buildings of Botsa Government School, Tsiesema GPS and Kigwema LPS were in a very disgraceful shape, “as if to collapse if  gently shaken, to make matter worse, if it drizzles also, there is leakage.”

The ASU said that  under such existing condition, students were  the worst suffers as they are not being guaranteed a conducive environment to learn. While welcoming the recent introduction of Hindi and Tenyidie, ASU also questioned to the department as to why there were no suitably trained teachers for the mentioned subjects. The  ASU found that there were no teachers at all in some schools. To its astonishment, there were no appropriate textbooks too.

Referring to the textbook issue, the ASU acknowledged the department for doing their bit sincerity, in helping out the cause of the students.

“However it feels that the department could still do better when it comes to timely distribution of textbooks, issuing of textbooks according to the particular current year enrolment and not as it was doing now. (Previous year’s enrolments), a released received here said.

The  ASU  received several complaints which it deemed, has to be dealt with adequate procedures. In the meantime, ASU opined that the education department be given a definite free hand from political interference in the running of administration concerning academic fields/aspects.

“To say the least, if there exist political interference with the higher ups, where/how can we respect justice towards our endeavors in imposing quality education?,” the release added.

The Union also questioned the department as to what necessary measures and directions are being applied on the implementation of fair and efficient education.

It also appealed to the authorities concerned  to take stock of the situation in its entirety at the earliest, for a better and desired result, failing to oblige with the said matters, the ASU warned that it would resort to its own course of action, for which the department will be held accountable for it.

ASU also expressed gratitude to all the units and rangesfor the support and cooperation throughout the tour.

Meanwhile, the  ASU also assured all the units that it will resolve to work out things through greater commitment and dedication for the betterment of the Angamis in particular and the Nagas in general.

It also thanked Viu-u Belhou for his  generosity in various forms towards the uplift of the Thekrejuma village.

As  the ASU proceeds on towards its goal of achieving rightful goals , it would like to request all the ranges/units, different associations, as well as well wishers to further stretch and enliven the ASU’s cause, according to a release issued by the Union general secretary Khrielievi Chusi and information and publicity secretary Vikehietuo Victor.
