ATMA conduct district farmers training

Dimapur, May 28 (MExN): Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA), Dimapur, Niuland and Aghunaqa block conducted within district farmers training at KVK training hall, Jharnapani on May 27.  

Resource person Dr. Ebibeni Ngullie, SMS (Animal Science), KVK (ICAR), Jharnapani spoke on the topic “Poultry Management” and said that chicken production under the free range and semi-intensive system is one of the viable alternatives for improving the livelihood of rural household which provide additional income and supplement protein intake in rural and tribal folks.  

Traditionally desi varieties are used for backyard poultry production but egg production potential is very low compared to vanaraja variety, a dual purpose bird in a year which is mostly reared these days in rural and urban households.  

She elaborated on the management techniques of poultry birds that included low cost housing, feeding, body weights, survivability percentage, egg production, cost benefit analysis, control of diseases like Ranikhet, IBD, Fowl Pox and to control it through vaccination and technical support. She highlighted on the success stories of poultry farmers from other blocks and districts and encouraged the participants to practice the same.  

Further, Imtisenla Walling, Technical officer, AMFU (ICAR), Jharnapani spoke on the topic “Agromet Advisories to Meet Climate Risks in Agricultural Front” and said that human activities like pollution, deforestation, population growth has decreased forest cover and increased in poisonous gases leading to change in weather patterns like droughts, rise in sea level, etc. In Nagaland visible effects can be seen like extreme weather events, decline in crops and livestock productivity, ground water drying up and new species of pests infecting crops.

She advised farmers to practice integrated farming system, crop rotation, agroforestry, mixed cropping, rain water harvesting, plant trees, and switch off and unplug electronics and electrical devices when not in use and to spread awareness about it. She also highlighted on the importance of Integrated Agromet Advisory Service (IAAS) and Kisan Mobile Advisory Service and the use of it in farming activities.  

The programme was chaired by Demalu Hasnusa, Block Technology Manager and welcome address was delivered by Dr. Anamika Sharma, Programme Co-ordinator, KVK Dimapur where she motivated farmers to practice poultry farming and assured assistance in terms of trainings, demonstrations and capacity building programmes. The participants visited ICAR poultry farm where 10 nos of 1 day old vanaraja chicks were distributed to each of them and were shown the methods of rearing and vaccinating vanaraja birds by the resource person.
