Dimapur: ATMA Dimapur Kuhuboto Block conducted a training cum demonstration on ‘package and practices of soyabean’ and ‘collection and testing on soil sampling’ at Lukuto village on March 15. Toivi Swu, AO & BTT Convenor (ATMA), Kuhuboto Block and TI Toshi, JSCO & AES Member (ATMA) Kuhuboto Block were the resource persons.
Block Technology Manager Akavi Holo in a press release said that Toivi gave an introduction on varieties of soyabean. Soyabean has been widely grown for its edible oil and is a rich source of protein. Soyabeans are considered a complete protein as it contains all the essential amino acids that must be provided to the human body because of the body’s inability to synthesize them, he stated.
Various soyabean food products are used for human consumption, including fermented soya, soya beverage, tofu, soya flour etc. It is a popular food for the majority people of Nagaland and utilized as a pulse crop and fermented products. He also emphasized on the selection of soil such as sandy loam and clay soil. He concluded elaborating on the control of disease and pest management.
TI Toshi illustrated to the participants the analysis of a soil sample that determine nutrient and contaminated content, composition and other characteristics such as the acidity or pH level. A soil test also determines fertility and is used to mimic the function of roots to assimilate minerals. He concluded by giving a live demonstration on the basic steps for collection of soil sample and how to differentiate a good nutrient soil from the bad ones. Altogether 35 farmers participated in the programme.
