
Kohima, April 30 (MExN): A programme for launching of ‘Vi’ Food Security Group (FSG) was organized by ATMA, Jakhama block at Khuzama village on April 27. The group, constituting of 10 members of mostly middle-aged women, were apprised of the purpose of their group formation and the role it plays in attaining food security.
Thereafter, a demonstration on wedge grafting of plum was given by Zakieho Lüho, a seasoned grafter, who had been practicing the technique for the past 70 years and thereby, had been able to supplement his income by sale of plant saplings.
Hybrid maize seed (HQPM-5) was distributed among the farmers and demonstrations on hybrid maize cultivation, IPM of stem borer of maize and application of neem oil in agriculture were also given based on the need of the farmers and to instill in them an awareness of the various technologies available for profitable agriculture. Hybrid maize, HQPM-5, while rich in protein is also resistant towards MLB disease and tolerant towards stem borer, thus, playing an important role in eco-friendly pest and disease management all the while contributing towards food security.
Altogether, 11 farmers and three ATMA functionaries participated in the programme.
