ATMA Peren conducts training & demonstration

Peren, November 29 (MExN): Ahthibung block under ATMA Peren conducted Training on ‘compost making from organic waste’ and Demonstration on ‘oyster mushroom cultivation’ and ‘Preparation of Ginger candy’ at Lilen village on November 16. The resource persons were Lireni Lotha, ATM and KeneingunuoSorhie, ATM of Ahthibung Block.  

A press release from ATMA Ahthibung Block stated that Lireni Lotha trained the farmers on various applicable methods of compost making from organic waste, to ensure better use of farm waste and also to cut down fertilizer cost. She explained that organic manure application aids not only by supplying essential plant nutrients but also improves the physical, chemical and biological properties of soil, thereby, maintaining the soil health.  

This was followed by demonstration on cultivation of oyster mushroom. Lireni illustrated the procedure on how to prepare the substrate from the available paddy straw and uniform sprinkling of spawn over the substrate in disinfected polybags. She stressed on following strict sanitary measures during the process. Furthermore, she also mentioned nutritive value and the benefits of mushroom as a cash crop generating income and employment.  

Keeping in view the large production of ginger at Lilen village and noting the low shelf life of ginger as an agriculture produce, and also noting the recent popularity of Ginger candy in the market, another step by step demonstration on ‘Preparation of Ginger candy’ was illustrated by Keneingunuo Sorhie. She stated that value addition of ginger will add extra income for the family and also explained the cost benefit ratio of the ginger candy production. Altogether 20 farmers attended the training. Mushroom spawns and polybags for mushroom cultivation were distributed.
