Average annual rainfall of Nagaland declines

Kohima, March 22 (MExN): Delivering a short presentation on ‘Rainfall Trend in Nagaland’, Lochumi Venuh, Deputy Director, Department of Soil & Water Conservation mentioned that the average annual rainfall of Nagaland has decreased from 2500 mm to 1525 mm within 30 years span coupled with uneven distribution which is “very alarming.”  

It was disclosed during the celebration of the UN World Water day with the theme ‘Nature for Water’ organised by Department of Soil & Water Conservation on March 22 at its conference hall.   Earlier, Viliehu Ngüzhu, Additional Director in his opening remark, stressed on the importance of water and quoted that ‘water is the blood of the plants and the nerve of the soil.’  

K. Zhekheto Awomi, Project Director, spoke on the history and theme of World Water Day 2018. He stressed that new solutions in managing water resources are needed so as to meet emerging challenges to water security caused by population growth and climate change and that ‘green’ infrastructure and ‘grey’ infrastructure should be harmonized wherever possible. He further added that it was time for us to re-examine nature-based solutions to help achieve water management objectives rebalance the water cycle and improve human health and livelihood. The programme was chaired by Limasunep, Deputy Director.
