Awareness campaign highlights human-animal conflict

Mokokchung, June 22 (MExN): Nagaland Forest Department organized an awareness campaign for protection and conservation of nature, forests and wildlife for man-animal conflict affected villages under Mokokchung district at ADC Conference hall, Mokokchung on June 21.

Deputy Commissioner, Mokokchung Rajesh Soundararajan, IAS graced the occasion as chief guest, Aochuba, Divisional Forest Officer, Mokokchung stated in a press release. The DC in his address stated that increasing population and various economic activities of human has degraded the habitat of animals which results in conflicting situation. He stated that animals also have the right to live so should be given enough space for mutual co-existence. He appealed to the participants from the villages for inculcating the habit of forests and wildlife conservation and act as the brand ambassador to spread the message of wildlife conservation in their respective villages.

The Principal Chief Conservator of Forests & Chief Wildlife Warden, SP Tripathi, IFS in his keynote address highlighted the importance of forests and wildlife. He stated that all basic needs of mankind are derived from Forests. He further called upon the villagers to come up with the proposal Community Conserved Areas which is funded by the Ministry of Forests, Environment & CC, New Delhi to mitigate the issue of man-animal conflict.

Supongnukshi, Chief Conservator of Forests (EBR), who was the special guest stated that  we have been a hunting community from time immemorial which we cannot afford to continue as it  has endangered many wildlife. He further stated that we need to understand the significance of birds, animals and other wildlife in the first place to inculcate the spirit of protection & conservation of wildlife amongst us.

Wildlife Conservation Society of India, Co-organiser of the awareness campaign also made an elaborate presentation on the unique and endemic wildlife resources of our state which needs protection & Conservation for the benefit of the people
