Awareness-cum-training on pulse production at Tangha

Longleng, September 19 (MExN): Awareness-cum-training on pulse production was conducted by Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Longleng in collaboration with Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) under PACE setting programme on September 12 at JNV Tangha village of Tamlu block in Longleng district.

  B. Singh, Principal, JNV Tangha gave a brief introduction on agricultural system of Tangha village and how to improve the productivity of agricultural crop. Project work of the students for agricultural development in Tangha village after harvesting of rice was presented by Rabikanta Lunglen.  

Resource person Dr. Manoj Kumar, SMS (Agronomy) presented the objective and scope of crop diversification for increasing cropping intensity and income of the farmers. He suggested cultivating pulses, oilseeds and vegetables after harvesting of rice. He also told the farmers to use paddy straw as mulching for suppressing the weeds and conserving the water in soil to increase the yield of crop.  

In the second presentation, he gave lecture on cultivation practices of pulses. He suggested to cultivate pulses after harvesting of rice to improve soil fertility and ultimately increasing the yield. Now is a time for sowing of green gram and black gram as second crop, which takes only 60-70 days for harvesting, he pointed out.  

Dr. Lily Ngullie, SMS (Animal Science) was present during the training. Farmers showed keen interest to take up pulse cultivation in rice fallow by this year itself, stated a press release received here. Green gram and black gram seed and fertilizers were distributed to the farmers.  

Altogether 31 teachers, students and farmers participated in the programme.
