Awareness drive on African Swine Fever cum vaccination drive in Phek district

Kohima, May 3 (MExN): In an effort to prevent the outbreak of African Swine Fever in the unaffected blocks of Phek district, the District Level Pig Federation in collaboration with Chakhesang Women Welfare Society, the Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services, Phek District and North East Initiative Development Agency-an Initiative of Tata Trusts conducted an awareness and vaccination drive from April 26 to 29. The drive was held in Porba, Pholami, Gidemi, Enhulumi, Sumi, Leshemi, Lasumi, Pfutseromi, Thetsumi and Zhavame villages.

During the programme, Dr Rosou Pohena, Veterinary Assistant Surgeon, Veterinary Dispensary Pfutsero discussed with the farmers on the origin of the ASF outbreak, their signs and symptoms, ways of transmission, steps of prevention and measures on how to safely discard affected and dead pigs.

Pig blood samples were also taken from Enhulumi village where ASF outbreak was suspected.

Dr Vihielie Sanchu, Senior Project Associate, NEIDA, emphasized on the importance and potential of collective efforts of the Pig Federation in order to bring in health and wealth through pig farming.

The programme also successfully vaccinated a total 504 pigs with CSF vaccination, and treated illnesses such as skin diseases, diarrhea and others commonly suffered by pigs.

Facemasks, disinfectants, dewormers, vitamins, mineral mixtures etc were also supplied to pig farmers.
