MLA and Advisor Wangpang Konyak addresses the gathering during the awareness programme on child rights held at the Town Council Hall in Mon district on April 29.

Mon, April 30 (MExN): The Nagaland State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NSCPCR) organised a one-day awareness programme on child rights at the Town Council Hall in Mon district on April 29.

MLA and Advisor for Social Welfare, Wangpang Konyak, attended the programme as special guest of honour. He said the initiative aimed at empowering children, educating communities and strengthening protection mechanisms against exploitation and abuse.

He urged people to enrol children in Anganwadi centres, warning that centres with low enrolment may face closure. He also cautioned against duplication in old-age pension entries and explained guidelines for availing benefits, stressing the importance of Aadhaar registration as a key document for accessing government schemes.

Deputy Commissioner of Mon, Wennyei Konyak, NCS, expressed gratitude to NSCPCR for organising what he described as a timely and meaningful programme. He said children form the foundation of society and are vital for the nation’s stability and progress.

Highlighting challenges such as child labour, exploitation, sexual abuse, lack of education and child marriage, particularly in remote areas, he noted that many parents remain unaware of child rights.

He stressed that awareness alone is insufficient and called for collective responsibility and community involvement. He assured that the district administration is committed to strengthening child protection mechanisms and ensuring that every child has access to education, safety and dignity. He urged stakeholders to work together to create an environment where children feel secure and empowered to achieve their goals.

Delivering the keynote address, NSCPCR Chairman Alun Hangsing (NCS Retd) underscored the importance of child rights, stating that societies that respect and protect children are truly progressive. He also highlighted the historical evolution of child rights and reiterated that children are the backbone of the nation.

The programme was chaired by M Alem Konyak, PO (IC), District Child Protection Unit (DCPU), while the vote of thanks was delivered by H Mewang Konyak, Member, Child Welfare Committee (CWC).

During the technical session, Legal Consultant NSCPCR Lichani Murry spoke on the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act. NSCPCR member Akumla Longchari spoke on the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, while member Aying Wangsa spoke on the Right to Education. District Child Protection Officer (DCPO) Mon, Sevehu Chuzho, presented the status of child-related issues in the district.
