Awareness on PPV&FRA held in Longleng

Longleng: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Longleng under ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Nagaland Centre, Jharapani conducted ‘training - cum - awareness programme on Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers Right Acts (PPV&FRA)’ sponsored by the PPF&FRA GOI, Ministry of Agriculture, New Delhi on March 28 at PBCA Hall Lempong. K. Libanthung Lotha, Deputy Commissioner, Longleng grace the occasion as chief guest. The programme started with welcome address by Dr. Manoj Kumar, Programme Co-ordinator (i/c).  

The DC said that since the establishment of KVK, timely awareness programme on topic like PPV & FRA is being conducted for the privileged villagers. He also shared his views for development of farming community of the entire district and urged the villagers to gain knowledge from KVK through the participation of different programme organized by KVK. Resource person, Dr. Patu Khate Zeliang (SMS Plant Breeding) gave an overview of the PPV & FRA with its objectives & functions to establish an effective system for the protection of plant varieties, farmer’s rights, plant breeders, to encourage development of new varieties and to recognize and reward farmers, communities, engaged in conservation, improvement, preservation of plant genetic resources and wild relatives. She recommended identification of the indigenous and unique crops of the village to put up for registration in the PPV & FRA and setting up of a village community/farmers association for seed banking.

Altogether around eighty farmers from the different village of Hukphang, Yongam, Sakshi,Yongnyah, Orangkong, Pongching, Pongo, Leintak, Yongshei and Ayong participated a day long programme. Spot registration process for four rice varieties and one colocasia were undertakn by Dr. Manoj Kmar (SMS & PC (i/c), Er. P. Chowdhury (SMS, SWCE) and Dr. Patu Khate Zeliang (SMS, Plant Breeding) and more registration will be done. The programme end with farmers’ interaction and E. Lireni Kikon (SMS Plant Protection) proposed vote of thanks.

Overall co-ordination and registration of farmers programme was carried out by Lireni Kikon and Thungchano S. Ezung (Programme Assistant, Home Science) and Inderjit Singh (Assistant).
