A one-day legal awareness programme on the theme “Legal Literacy: Power Through Knowledge” was organised by Jugni Fellowship in collaboration with Avaazein Foundation at Sumi Hoho Ki in Zunheboto on November 28.
Abel Ayemi, Advocate, Gauhati High Court (Kohima Bench) and NESCH–NELN (Nagaland office), delivered a session on “Women’s Right: Constitutional and Customary Laws.” He highlighted key constitutional protections for women as well as the interface with customary practices in Nagaland, encouraging participants to recognize how law can be used to safeguard women’s dignity and equality.
Benison V Shohe, Advocate, Gauhati High Court (Kohima Bench) and NESCH–NELN (Nagaland office), focusing on “Domestic Violence: Recognising Abuse (Marriage, Divorce and Maintenance Law),” explained the way the law defines domestic violence, the rights of survivors in marriage and separation, and the importance of seeking timely legal and institutional support.
The final technical session on the “Role of Institutions: CWC, Child Helpline, Sakhi” was led by Polan Yeptho, Coordinator of Child Helpline, Zunheboto. He outlined how the Child Welfare Committee, child helpline services and Sakhi centers work together to respond to cases of child abuse and exploitation, and urged the community to report such cases without hesitation.
