Kohima, July 14 (MExN): 9 Assam Rifles under the aegis of HQ IGAR (North)/ HQ 5 Sector Assam Rifles, organised an awareness programme on ‘drug abuse’ on July 11 at Chakhesang Mission School, Pfutsero, Government High School, Chizami and Government High School Kezocha.
The lecture was attended by more than 385 students and 31 staff teachers. During the programme, the students were educated about the various types and form of drugs (natural, manufacture and synthetic) and discussed the factors that contribute to people becoming addicted to them and pointed out that the lack of religious faith, negligence of parents and bad company were some of the major reasons for moral deviation. Stating on the lecture that smoking as ‘The Gateway’ to drug addiction and explained how a drug addict could rapidly turn into a criminal.
Students were also educated the harmful effects of drugs that poses greater problems to the society and also disturbs the sustainable development of a nation and due to unsafe injection of drugs have more chances of HIV transmission and was highlighted to the students.
Col C Konwer, PRO (Defence) in a press release stated that at the end of the programme, the school principals and headmasters during their speech thanked the company of Assam Rifles for organizing the event and creating awareness among the children and the staffs on the risk of drug abuse. Motivational lecture on career opportunities in Armed Forces for the students of Class 11 and 12 was given and sweets were distributed to the students.
