AWO condemns improper use of Naga attire in Instagram reel

KOHIMA, DECEMBER 7 (MExN): The Angami Women Organization (AWO) has expressed its disappointment and concern over an Instagram reel created by one Agou Hengoulal Sitlhou, which displayed a lack of respect and improper use of Naga traditional attires.

In a press statement, the AWO noted that Naga traditional attires are not merely garments and ornaments to be worn; they have rich significance both historically and culturally. Each piece of the Naga traditional attires reflects the heritage, identity and values of the communities they represent, and they carry the stories of the ancestors, woven with care and worn with a deep sense of pride and dignity.

Pointing out that these attires are a vital part of our cultural heritage and should be portrayed respectfully, in accordance with the traditions and intentions of our culture, the organization said any misuse, mockery or commercialization of these garments diminishes their true meaning and undermines the cultural richness they embody.

While encouraging the appreciation of Naga traditional clothing, the AWO said such appreciation and display must be rooted in respect and understanding. Using these attires for costumes, superficial displays, or profit-driven purposes not only disrespects the communities they belong to but also demeans the value it holds and the authenticity of our traditions, it emphasized.

The reel in question, according to the AWO, featured various tribal attires in a way that failed to honor their true significance. It labelled the content as not a celebration of Naga culture, but rather a derisive portrayal.

In light of this, the AWO has called on the creator of the reel to remove the content and issue a public apology for misrepresenting Naga traditional attire without understanding its cultural importance. The organization also called upon all individuals to have a deeper understanding of traditional attires before displaying it publicly.
