AYO, ASU appeal Assam Rifles to stop creating 'mental tension'

DIMAPUR, JUNE 22 (MExN): The Angami Youth Organization (AYO) and Angami Students' Union (ASU) in a joint statement have appealed the Assam Rifles to “stop creating mental tension” on the public.

It lamented that the promulgation and imposition of the Armed Force Special Powers Act (AFSPA) since 1958 in Nagaland continue to insult the honor of the Nagas as sub-human beings who does not deserve an iota of respect and human dignity by New Delhi.

Stating that the “unceasing act of Assam Rifles raiding houses in the wee hours have become a compulsive behavior unbefitting of any professional army,” the two organizations cited the latest instance being the raid on the residence of a prominent citizen and contractor, Kezhaleo Rülho at Bayavü colony, Kohima creating mental torture and fear psychosis especially to his young children, wife and parents.

The two organizations said Nagaland has been experiencing a relative peace since the signing of ceasefires over the years with various groups and also the initiative of the Forum of Naga reconciliation to forge unity.

It pointed out that this hard earned peace is extremely fragile and difficult to be brought about adding, “We do not need the friends of the hill people to destroy this hard earned peace. It is too precious for us to lose.”

BYO condemns ‘autocratic’ practice of AR

The Bayavü Youth Organization, KMC Ward-2 (BYO) also condemned the raid carried out by the AR at the residence of Kezhali-o Rülho, lower Bayavü during his absence on June 20.

“BYO KMC WARD-2 strongly condemns such autocratic and dictatorial practices made by 3rd Battalion Assam Rifles, Kohima,” it stated. The press release issued by BYO stated that “The actions of the AR have created immense perturbation and insecurity upon the mind of all peaceful residents, women and children in particular.”
