'Backward Class status hindering forward movement of region'

DIMAPUR, JUNE 24 (MExN): “The backward class stage has passed. Let us forget the backward class reservation/quota” said Tochu Imlong speaking at the 12th General Session of the Tuensang Mon Union Dimapur held at Tourist Lodge, Dimapur on June 24. He pointed out that the backward class category allotted to the citizens of Tuensang and Mon has been one of the main hindrances in moving forward for the people.

While pointing out that students have now begun to look for forward, Imlong urged the people not to look only at the reserve quota. Asserting  that the merging of Tuensang and Mon district  as a union was a very wise move, he urged the people not to lose the spirit of trust. Unity among the people being the main objective of the union, he encouraged the members of the union to work for the unity of the people of the two districts.

He also thanked the youths and the students, who he termed as, “the torch bearers of the future,” for actively participating in the meeting.

Imliyanger Sangtam, Taxes Commissioner Dimapur addressing the members said, “unity is turning into vanity.” While informing that  there are six  tribes under the TMUD, Sangtam said the binding force should be strong and systematic. He further urged the union and the members to be strong while articulating that no external force or misunderstanding will disrupt the union if the union remains steadfast.

Wangyuh Konyak, MP Lok Sabha who could not attend the general session stated in a faxed message that the many branches of ENPO in and outside the state clearly indicate the unity of the Tuensang-Mon people. The MP lamented that the people call the Tuensang-Mon people as backward because, “we are lacking economically, educationally and in development. Therefore, it is we to educate our people to catch up other advance tribes in all fronts especially in education.” Wangyuh in his message further stated  that till the people have qualitative education others cannot come to the rescue and remove the very word ‘Backward Tribe’. He also called upon the leaders of ENPO residing in Dimapur to forge more unity and understanding for the benefit of common people.

The Tuensang-Mon Union Dimapur as directed by the Eastern Naga Public organization (ENPO), the apex body Tuensang-Mon district will be called as Eastern Nagaland Union Dimapur (ENUD) thus changing its nomenclature with effect from June 25.

Earlier, A.Neangba Konyak, President TMUD in his Presidential address urged the people to work for unity and to strengthen the new office bearers. The out-going General Secretary W.Lemba Chang thanking the members for their co-operation expressed his hope that the new office bearers will complete the pending works/schemes which they are leaving incomplete. The gathering also offered one minute silenct prayer for the leaders who have passed away serving the people. The meeting elected its new President Heno Khiamnuingan and  General Secretary Mosa Konyak for the coming session.
